SUNDAY 29TH JANUARY

Been a wet week! Tried to dig but far too wet so gave up. Felt a bit stir crazy that I hadn’t done anything this week on the garden or allotment, so although it was cold today, got out for quite a few hours in the garden and greenhouse. Helped by a few cups of hot tea I cleared and prepared my raised beds ready for planting.
All I’ve got left in the beds are some beetroot and some perpetual spinach. I’m hanging on to the beetroot as I’ve got a lovely recipe for “Beetroot Cake” to make. Still harvesting the spinach and using in stir fries and pancakes.
I have also cleared a space that had strawberries in for the last couple of years and intend to make it into an herb garden. I’ve already got some parsley thriving but found last year that I didn’t have enough herbs for my cooking. The area is about one metre square to the left of the raised beds, so it should be enough to grow a wider selection of herbs than I have to date. Being in the garden I’ll be able to harvest them easily. With this in mind I sowed some Basil and Oregano and brought them into the conservatory as it’s a bit warmer in there.
I also sowed some more sweet peas. I bought a pack of sweet peas with six different varieties, so it’ll be interesting to see which ones grow the best. I also planted in a seed tray some iceberg lettuce(challenge), a variety that can be sown at this time of the year. The brilliant news is that there’s activity in the sweet peas that I sowed last week in the root trainers. A few have germinated along with a few leeks. Also the garlic has started to sprout, which is really pleasing.
I’ve got two compost bins at home on the go. The compost in the one bin is very nearly ready, probably about 6-8 weeks, which will be nicely timed ready to add to my raised beds before I plant in them. The other bin I’m constantly adding any peelings, shredded paper and anything that’s suitable. In addition I turn it with a fork whenever I’m out in the garden. You can never have enough homemade compost!
I achieved quite a lot today. It was very cold this afternoon and I believe the weather is set to get colder this week, so will have to see if I can continue preparing my beds up on the allotment this week. Enjoy your garden!
